William “Bill” Louis Remington, Sr., 93, of Westfield, Indiana, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home on Monday, May 25, 2026.
The second of four children, Bill was born on May 28, 1932, to Fred W. and Lillie May (Johnson) Remington in Fredericktown, Ohio.
Bill was a graduate of Loudonville High School, Loudonville, Ohio, (1950) and attended Ohio University, Athens, Ohio, (1951).
Bill had a long career as Personnel Manager, Product Developer & Sales Representative, and Human Resources Director; employed by Simmons Manufacturing in Illinois, Faultless Rubber, Swan Rubber, Mansfield Sanitary Pottery, and FE Myer Company, all in Ohio. He retired from Best Lock Corporation, Indianapolis, Indiana, as Human Resources Director. After retirement, he joined an employment agency for a while and finished his working years delivering titles, participating in vehicle pick-up and auctions for 16 years at Indianapolis Car Exchange.
Sensing his country’s need, he enlisted in the Air Force January 29, 1952, serving as Staff Sargeant with 524th Strategic Fighter Squadron (SAC). He was stationed at Amarilla AFB in Austin, Texas, with an honorable release from active duty on January 21, 1956 from Bergstrom AFB, Texas. He received the National Defense Service Metal and Good Conduct Medal.
Thanks to Bill's best military buddy, Norbert Buchholz, Bill met and married Norbert's sister, Dolores Arlene Buchholz. They were married on September 2, 1956. She struggled with cancer and passed away on February 8, 1983. Bill and Dolores had three children, Bill Jr., Bob and Lori.
In God’s Providence, Bill met and married Mert Baughey on January 7, 1984. It was a job change that brought Bill and Mert to Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1987. Bill became Dad to Mert’s two children, Jerry II and Kristen.
In high school, Bill was a member of the famed undefeated football team of 1949 as well as one of six upper class boys to build furniture for the summer home of inventor Charles Kettering. Bill was active in Kiwanis Club, a member of First Baptist Church and Trinity Lutheran Church, both in Ohio, and Colonial Hills Baptist Church from 1987-2026. He served as Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, Choir and Men’s Ensemble member, and Greeter addressing himself to newcomers as “Over-the-Hill Bill!”
Bill had a great work ethic instilled in him from his dad. He was “his own handyman” around the house and yard. He enjoyed playing tennis, being with family and friends, grilling and eating a great burger!
Though music was high on the list of Bill’s enjoyment, his greatest love was for Jesus Christ and serving Him to the best of his ability. He arose at 3:30 am each day to have time with the Lord in prayer and in God’s Word. His desire was to know Him in a deeper way and to share God’s love with others. He had a way of encouraging people to trust in God and grow in their understanding of Him. Bill had a beautiful tenor voice. He sang in quartets, ensembles, solos, and choir.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Lillie Remington; his first wife, Dolores Buchholz; sisters, Opal Purcell and Margaret Van Camp.
He is survived by his wife Mert; brother, Rev. Bob Remington (Carolyn); children, Bill Remington Jr. (Jan), Bob Remington (Julie), Lori Williamson (Rich), Jerry Baughey (Lora), and Kristen Smith (Scott).
