Sonia Karen Murphy, 82 of Carmel, passed peacefully on September 3, 2023. She was born April 26, 1941 in Carroll County, Flora, Indiana, the youngest daughter of Blanche and Raymond Landis. She was a proud Flora Badger, in the graduating class of 1959.
Sonia enjoyed going to reunions and staying in touch with many of her high school friends. In 1964, she married Richard (Dick) Murphy and they moved to Indianapolis to start a family. They would settle in both Broad Ripple and Carmel raising their three girls, Sarah, Catherine, and Amanda. Dick and Sonia were forever changed by the devastating loss of their daughter Sarah. Sarah, at just 6 years old, had lost her battle with Leukemia.
You may recognize Sonia from the checkout line at Kroger, where she worked for more than 35 years. She enjoyed the relationships she built over the years, and loved to run into her old customers, while she was out and about.
Sonia served as a Hamilton County 4-H leader, during the time Catherine and Amanda were involved. She kept a handle on the raising of champion rabbits and preparing blue ribbon worthy baked goods.
After the passing of her husband Dick, in 2007, Sonia found great comfort and friendships in her Widow's Support Group, often meeting for lunch and other social gatherings.
In 2015 she became a grandmother with the birth of Adeline, daughter of Amanda and her husband Kris Miller. She would light up with joy whenever Adeline was around. Adeline, (named after Sonia's mother Blanche Adeline Landis) shared a special bond with her grandmother that will be deeply missed.
Sonia was steadfast in her faith. Always a prayer before dinner, and several more just to get there. She will rejoice as the Lord welcomes her into His kingdom.
In addition to her parents, Sonia was preceded in death, by her daughter, Sarah Murphy; husband, Richard Murphy; brother, Joe Landis; and sister, Sue Tobin.
Survivors include her daughters, Catherine (Jeff) Burton, and Amanda (Kris) Miller; granddaughter, Adeline Miller; and sister, Margaret Hayes.
