Sedonia Mae (Allen) Joyner

Sedonia Joyner Obituary

Sedonia Mae Joyner was born February 21, 1938 to the late Rev. William and Magnolia Allen. She was the fourth of 13 children.

Sedonia accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized and united with Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church in Gary.  She was a former member of Deliverance Temple Church, and current member of Kingdom Faith Ministries under the leadership of Rev. Drew Smith.  

After graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1956, Sedonia completed the cosmetology program at Odessa’s Beauty College.  While working as a licensed cosmetologist, she completed the Certificate in Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) Program at Purdue University Calumet.  She also earned an Associate of Science degree in Nursing from Indiana University Northwest in 1977.  She began her nursing career as an LPN in Pediatrics at Methodist Hospital in Gary.  Later, she progressed to become Head Nurse of Pediatrics and Head Nurse of the IV Team, simultaneously.  Her final position was Director of Oncology.  She retired after 34 years of nursing.  

Sedonia was an active member of The Red Hat Society in Gary, the National Black Nurses Association, and the Gary Community Schools Foster Grandparent Program. 

On 12 July 1957, she united in holy matrimony to the late Victor Joyner Sr.  To this union two children were born: Victor Joyner Jr. and Selinda Joyner. 

Sedonia went home to be with the Lord on 10 March 2025 at Hendricks Regional Health Hospital in Danville, IN. She was proceeded in death by her parents; her husband; eight brothers, James, Rudolph, George, Leon, Lee Ellis, Bernard, Dwight and Dwayne. Also three sisters, Celotta Allen, Edna Jamison, and Mildred Freeman; and grandparents, Percy and Eliza Bassett.
 

Sedonia is survived by one son, Victor Joyner Jr of Plainfield, IN; one daughter, Selinda Joyner of Patuxent River, MD; one sister, Jeannie Greer of Canyon County, CA; two grandsons, Victor Joyner III of San Diego, CA, and Jordan Ryan of Plainfield, IN; devoted niece, Carman McCollum of Crown Point, IN; and a host of relatives and friends.

Family and friends will gather at 10am on Friday, March 28, 2025 in CrossRoads Church, 19201 Grassy Branch Road, Westfield, IN 46074, where the Celebration of Life Service will begin at 11am.

A Committal Service will follow in Hamilton Memorial Park, 4180 Westfield Road, Westfield, IN.
