Rev. Jack King Obituary

Rev. Jack T. King, 95, a former resident of Carmel and pastor emeritus of Carmel United Methodist Church, passed away at 11:31 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 2022 at the Towne House Retirement Community in Fort Wayne.

Rev. King was born on August 9, 1927 in Patterson, Louisiana, a son of Rev. Thomas F. and Henrietta (Brown) King, and spent his formative years in southern Louisiana.  He received his undergraduate degree from Bob Jones University and earned his master’s degree in theology from Asbury Theological Seminary.  He later earned a second master’s degree in theology from Butler University.

On July 20, 1950, he was married in Herrin, Illinois to Doris Stubblefield.  The couple were married for over 61 years until her death on August 14, 2011 following a lengthy illness.

A member of the Indiana Conference of The United Methodist Church, his career as a clergyperson included the Lincolnville-Mt. Hope-Pilcher Chapel circuit; Nineth Street Church, Marion; Main Street Church, Logansport; Windfall; Grace Church, Kokomo; First Church, Elwood; and St. Matthew’s Church, Anderson. In 1978 he joined the staff of Carmel United Methodist Church.

In 1990 he served as pastor of the Seoul (Korea) Union Church for three years, before retiring and returning to Carmel. After retirement he continued to be an integral part of the ministries of Carmel United Methodist Church, and its Jack T. King Family Life Center was named in his honor.

In 2011 he was honored by the Carmel Rotary Club with its Outstanding Service Rosa Award and was given an honorary Paul Harris Fellow award.

He and his wife found great enjoyment and satisfaction in leading weekend retreats for married couples called Married Enrichment for many years.  In addition to preaching, he enjoyed Bible teaching, and pastoral care and counseling.  A lifelong learner, he and his wife had traveled extensively around the globe, and in addition to living in Korea for three years, had also lived in England for a year in 1968.

In addition to his parents and spouse, he was preceded in death by his son Dr. Ted King on October 15, 2014.
