Nighel Jean (True) Isley, 96, of Carmel, passed away February 5, 2021. She was born July 2, 1924 in Orleans, IN, first born of Joseph D. and Hazel (Todd) True.
The night Nighel was born was announced over the telephone lines by an operator who worked at the telephone company. Since Orleans was a small town, and Nighel’s aunts worked as telephone operators, it was easy to get the news out. The news spread quickly that Joe, commonly known as Bud, had a little baby girl, born in her four-room house in Orange County. Wonderful memories were made as a young girl: riding bikes to the park, roller skating, working in their large vegetable garden, caring for the chickens, and playing with sister, Connie and brother, Joseph.
The family moved to Bedford when Nighel was in the sixth grade. The family home was a big two-story house with a lovely front porch. Nighel made many friends who became lasting friendships. She was a 1942 graduate of Bedford High School. Nighel began working at Crane Depot where she became an excellent typist.
Nighel and Paul were married July 28, 1952. They moved to Carmel, in the early 1950’s, built their house, and it became home even after Paul passed away in 1998. Nighel continued to live in her home until moving to the Barrington in 2013.
Before the days of working wives and moms, Nighel was an active member of the Rekamemoh Club (homemaker spelled backward) and the Lemrac Club (Carmel spelled backward), where she made lifelong friends. Nighel was also a member of the PHCC Auxiliary (Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling Contractors) in support of Paul’s involvement, and the White River Christian Church.
When Nighel was in her 40’s, she discovered the joy of playing golf and joined three leagues throughout the years. She enjoyed playing golf with her only daughter-in-law, Cherie, as well as they belonged to a Wednesday afternoon bowling league. Other interests and hobbies included playing solitaire, working jigsaw puzzles and her love of reading. In her later years, Nighel found the gift of writing poems.
The greatest joy in her life was spending time with family. She made certain whenever needed, she was there.
In addition to her parents, Nighel was preceded in death by her sister, Connie Montgomery; brother, Joseph D. True; husband, Paul E. Isley and son, Larry W. Isley.
Survivors include daughter-in-law, Cherie Isley; grandchildren, Brad (Charlotte) Isley, Doug (Kelly) Isley, and Tammy (Brian) Phelan; great-grandchildren, Zachary Hall, Kimberly Hall, Peighton Isley and Bailey Isley; great great-granddaughter, Aliviah Ector.
A time of visitation will take place at 1:30 pm, Tuesday, February 9, 2021 in Traders Point Christian Church North where the funeral service will begin at 2:00 pm.
