Martha Jane (Smith) Haskett, 93, of Carmel and Sheridan, passed away September 21, 2020 surrounded by family. She was born June 26, 1927 in Indianapolis, daughter of Paul and Zella (Morris) Smith.
Paul was a carpenter and after moving his family to Home Place near 106th and College, he built the house Martha Jane and her siblings grew up in. It was the Depression era, so when Martha Jane was a little older, she slept on the couch instead of a bed. Martha remembered some of her favorite activities growing up included swinging in the front yard swing (even though younger sister, Amy always “hogged” the swing), riding her bike and going on wagon rides. A fond memory was the time her dad bought corn and sister, Sue said “Oh Boy” dad bought more; however, it was only the brand name of the corn.
Martha loved her family deeply and fiercely. She will be greatly missed, and her memories will forever be cherished.
In addition to her parents, Martha Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Haskett; son, Gary Haskett; grand-daughter, Tammy Haskett; great-grandson, John Edward Cannon; great-granddaughter, Aubrey Turner; sisters, Lois Smith and Amy Whitmer; brothers, Russell Smith and David Smith.
Survivors include her children, Cheryl (Larry) Loring, Ed (Mary) Haskett, Sally Waggoner, Susie Wright, Cathy (Charles) Moore and Mike (Susie) Haskett; 18 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; sister, Sue Sanders and, sister-in-law, Naomi Smith.
Family and friends will gather on Friday, September 25, 2020 at 11 am in Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 445 E. 111th Street, Indianapolis where the funeral service will begin at 1 pm.
Burial will follow in Carmel Cemetery.
