Magdalene "Mickie" Herdegen, 101, of Westfield, passed away Monday, December 30, 2019. She was born in Deuseldorf, Germany on June 26, 1918 to John and Barbara (Hoffstetter) Weiss.
In 1924, Magdalene along with her family, immigrated to the US, choosing Milwaukee WI as home. Life was difficult surviving through war and the Depression. She fondly recalled that her luck changed when at the age of 19, Mickie met her husband-to be at a Saturday evening dance. He lovingly nicknamed her Mickie, a name which she carried throughout her life. Two years later, Benedict Herdegen and Magdalene were married and began their life together in Wauwatosa, WI where they raised three daughters.
Mickie was a warm, kind and loving woman. Remembered by her grandchildren as having a happy disposition and a warm smile. She was a lady with a great style and a flair distinctly her own. Having a talent for decorating her home, she enjoyed entertaining her friends and family with delicious meals she prepared, especially her signature dish, Hungarian Ghoulash.
In addition to her parents, Magdalene was preceded in death by her loving husband, 'Benedict Herdegen; daughter, Darlene Roesslein; sons-in-law, James O'Kane and Tim Bonesho; grandson, Chad Bonesho; siblings, Hilda Metz, Frederick Meyer and Joseph Meyer.
Survivors include her daughters, Sheryl O'Kane and Janice Bonesho; son-in-law, Ken Roesslein; granddaughter, Shannon Harris; grandson, Tim O'Kane (Toni), granddaughter-in-law, Brittany Bonesho; great-grandchildren, Brenden O'Kane, Matthew O'Kane, Connor Harris, Declan Harris, Cooper Bonesho, Anne Bonesho, Joshua Burns and Jake Burns.
A Memorial Mass will be conducted at 10:30 am, Friday, January 10, 2020 in St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, 17104 Springmill Road, Westfield.
