Reverend Lora Ann Zurwell Metz, 89, of Mooresville, IN, was joyfully received into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Saturday, April 12, 2025. A devoted servant of Christ, Lora lived a life overflowing with love, faith, and tireless service to others.
Born on February 20, 1936, in Richmond, IN, to Richard and Mildred Zurwell, Lora answered God’s call early in life. She earned her BA from Johnson Bible College (now Johnson University) and went on to receive a master’s in counseling from Indiana University and Christian Theological Seminary.
Lora faithfully served as a missionary in Brazil for 17 years, where she taught, wrote curriculum that was nationally adopted, and composed sacred music for the Jovens Em Cristo youth group. Her ministry touched lives across two continents and countless hearts.
Her selfless commitment continued stateside through service at the Wayne County Mental Health Association, Area 9 Agency, the Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery, and more. She pioneered the beloved “I’m Thumb Body” program — promoting self-worth and kindness in schools across the U.S. — and received the prestigious Hoosier Lifetime Achievement Award for her boundless volunteer work.
Lora’s heart for ministry extended to those in prisons, on the streets, and struggling with addiction. She saw people not for their circumstances, but through the eyes of Christ — offering hope, healing, and dignity. A powerful prayer warrior, she blanketed family, friends, and strangers in prayer, believing deeply in God’s miraculous power and unconditional love.
Music was Lora’s second language. An accomplished musician, she played the organ, piano, accordion, guitar, and clarinet — often teaching others and leading her family in joyful worship and silly camp songs alike. Whether directing choirs, leading Sunday School, or composing worship music, her praise was always heartfelt and pure.
A loving wife to the late Reverend William L. Metz and devoted mother and grandmother, Lora raised her family in the presence of God — through songs, scripture, games, and adventures. She even prayed over every batch of brownies she baked, believing that each ingredient could carry a blessing.
Lora’s legacy is one of radiant joy, deep wisdom, and unwavering faith. Her life was a reflection of Jesus — full of compassion, humility, laughter, and love.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. William L. Metz, and brother, Mark Zurwell.
Survivors include her children; Meribeth Metz, William (Lori) L. Metz Jr., and Loretta (George M., II) J. (Metz) Quinn; grandchildren, Allison Quinn, Natalie Quinn, Michael (Catherine) Quinn, Mychael Horn, and Matthew Horn; and great-grandchildren, Bishop Horn and Ozzy Horn.
Family and Friends will gather on Friday, April 25, 2025, at 12 noon in the First Christian Church, 100 South 10th Street, Richmond, IN, where the Celebration of Life and “Graduation to Heaven” Service will be held at 2 pm.
A Committal Service will follow at Goshen Cemetery, Richmond, IN.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages acts of kindness, words of encouragement, and prayers in Lora’s memory — continuing the love and light she so freely gave.
