Karl Jacob Maierhofer, 81, of Carmel, IN passed away on January 2, 2021. Karl was born in Evanston, Illinois on September 10, 1939, to parents Jacob William and Elsie Biesman Maierhofer. Although an only child, Karl grew up surrounded by his extended German family.
Karl is survived by his wife, Amy, her grandson Evan Gray, son David, daughter Laurie Sparling and 5 grandchildren. His daughter Kristen preceded him in death in 2009.
He earned his undergraduate degree and MBA from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. Karl spent over 20 years in the moving and storage industry, working for Bekins, North American and Mayflower Transit Company. His transfer to the Indianapolis Corporate Headquarters of Mayflower to run the operations department of their Special Products and Trade Show division was also the beginning of his life with Amy.
Karl and Amy were married in 1985 at Carmel United Methodist Church in Carmel, Indiana. They quickly became active members with Karl serving as the Chair of the Board of Trustees for many years. The church has been generous in their definition of Karl as “a pillar of our church.” Karl and Amy also became involved in missions and participated in dozens of mission and work trips over the years. Providing great memories were the youth trips they helped chaperone. Karl’s carpentry skills and willingness (and patience) to teach those skills to teenagers made him a popular participant among the youth. Karl also went on over a dozen trips to Henderson Settlement in Kentucky, joining his fellow ROMEOs in helping the people of Appalachia.
In 1988 Karl left the corporate world and started his own business, Jacob’s Ladder, utilizing his extensive woodworking and business skills as a custom cabinet maker. Homes throughout central Indiana can boast of having the products of his talents. He was especially proud of the works he produced for the church.
Karl was a skilled, kind, quiet, loving soul who loved his Lord and worked hard to serve others. After several tough years with medical challenges, he is at last at peace in Heaven.
No flowers please, but contributions to the Carmel United Methodist Church Building Endowment Fund would be greatly appreciated.
