Justo Alarcon Obituary

Justo S. Alarcon, 94, of Indianapolis, IN, passed away Saturday, August 3, 2024. He was born March 10, 1930, in Riogordo, Málaga, Spain, son of Justo Saco and Encarnacion Saco Alarcón. His father moved young Justo and the family from Andalucía in southern Spain to Galicia on the northwest coast during the tumultuous years of the Spanish civil war.  There Justo and his 10 siblings grew up and received their early education.

While Justo was in his early 20’s, he moved from Spain to Quebec Canada to continue his education. Eventually, he settled in Michigan where he met his future wife, Elvira. Their love became apparent, and they moved to Arizona. They married in 1963 and in 1968, Miguel, their son, was welcomed into the family. They enjoyed 61 years of living life together.

Educated in Spain, Canada, and the US, Justo earned multiple degrees, including two master’s degrees and a doctorate. He was Professor emeritus at Arizona State University. His professional career as a university professor allowed him to touch the lives of countless people. Justo was affectionately known as “El Profe” and was much loved by his students, university faculty and staff, as well as others in education and human rights.

As a prolific writer, Justo’s mind never stopped.  Even in his advanced years, he would spend many hours at his computer, reading, writing, researching, always in pursuit of more knowledge and experience. He loved beauty which he recognized in fine arts, his gift as a pianist, and classical music. Perhaps most of all, Justo found the beauty of nature most rewarding as it was always changing and inexhaustible.

Justo was strong in his faith, very generous, giving to all, and always selfless!

In addition to his parents, Justo was preceded in death by 8 brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 61 years, Elvira Alarcon; son, Miguel Alarcon, and his wife Alexandra, whom Justo loved as his own daughter, calling her “mija,” Spanish for “my darling daughter; and two sisters, Encarnita and Pilar.
