Joyce Ann Cones Rogers, 85, of Carmel, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 17, 2024. She was born March 24, 1938 in Thorntown, IN, daughter of Asher Clayton Cones and Wilma Adelene Castile Cones.
Following her 1956 graduation from Thorntown High School, Joyce attended Ball State Teacher’s College. She later obtained her master’s in education from Butler University.
In 1961, Joyce married her husband, Joe W. Rogers of Elizabethton, TN, in a small wedding ceremony in her parents’ home. Together they made Carmel their home until his passing in 2002.
Joyce worked for Carmel Clay Schools teaching 2nd grade at Orchard Park Elementary, 1st grade at Carmel Elementary then staying home for nine years to raise her children. She returned to 3rd grade at College Wood Elementary, where she finished her career of 31 years in teaching. Joyce loved children and learning and volunteered in the community whenever an opportunity presented itself. She was active in education until her 70’s working for Chaucie’s Place and mentoring new teachers for IU Kokomo.
She is survived by her brother, Marvin (Peggy) Cones; daughter, Gayle (Lawrence) Cress; son, Mark (Kris) Rogers; the loves of her life-grandchildren, Megan Rogers, Emily Rogers, Summer Cress, Lawrence Cress II, Sydney Jo Cress, and Matthew Rogers; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many close friends.
In fulfilling Joyce’s wishes, there will not be a funeral service; however, a celebration of her life and party for family will take place.
Joyce’s final resting place, alongside her husband Joe, will take place in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Thorntown.
In lieu of flowers and in memory of Joyce, contributions may be made to the Carmel Historical Society, Carmel Fire Department, or Carmel Friends Church, of which she was a longtime member.
