Jeannine Koon Obituary

Jeannine E. (Usher) Koon, 83, of Northampton, PA, formerly of Carmel, IN, passed away peacefully in Lehigh Hospital March 1, 2021 in Allentown, PA.

She was born March 12, 1937 in the family home on Gallatin Street, Marion, IN, daughter of Denver Daniel and Ethel Evelyn (Jones) Usher. She was a cradle roll birthright Quaker.  Jeannine was the apple of her daddy’s eye and grew up with family literally surrounding her, living on the same block.

The Easter Pageant in her community was an important annual celebration and Jeannine was actively involved in different roles for many years.

Jeannine was a 1955 graduate of Marion High School where she became the first female class officer of any graduating class. She co-founded a “Sub Deb” club called the “Besses” and they remained life-long friends. An honor student throughout her education, Jeannine was awarded a full scholarship to Ball State University where she excelled in academics and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 1959.  The year 1959 brought big changes, a May graduation brought a December wedding which marked the beginning of a 58-year marriage adventure.  In 1960, Jeannine became a mother and the years 1964 and 1972 brought more motherhood joy!

Jeannine’s passion for music included singing in several different choirs, playing the piano and accordion.  Her creativity led to producing many children’s programs over the years.   Another passion in life was teaching.  When Jeannine retired as Director of Carmel Little Friends, it was a sad day for her because she enjoyed it so much and invested her heart into it.  She especially loved having 3 of her own grandchildren in her program.

Her “Teaching” Units were implemented in the Middle Eastern Missionary “Friend” schools.  In the Carmel Monthly Meeting of Friends, Jeannine was honored by the Board of Christian Education for her many years of service to the children of Carmel Friends Church.

During the years, Off to See the Wizard was a favorite “transition” song which meant we’re going somewhere… get ready!  Jeannine was involved in many musicals, high school performances, civic theatre, and attending music at the park.  She looked forward to Branson trips where she attended the variety of shows.  As an avid fan of Lawrence Welk, Saturday nights were for her listening and dancing pleasure. It is obvious music was a big part of her entire life.

Jeannine loved to read novels.  She also kept a journal about her life travels, recording many memories for the family enjoyment. Camping with old friends, making new friends brought much joy and pleasure to her life.

Jeannine loved the Lord and lived according to His teachings and was steadfast in the direction of her life.  She was a woman of resilience, character, integrity, kindness, and patience.  She was a wonderful example of an A+ daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, teacher, and friend. Jeannine will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, Jeannine was preceded in death by her husband, H.D. “Duane” Koon; daughter, Tamara “Tammi” Koon; and sister, Pat Hoober.

Survivors include her daughters, Juane “Kiki” (Jay) O’Rourke and Kenitra “Nikki” (Mark) Trausch; grandchildren, Donovan (Fie), Hailey (Dustin), Jonathan, Nick, Chris, Evey; and first great-grandchild, Rowan.
