Janice E. Smith, 95, Carmel, IN, passed away September 23,2024. Jan was born January 22, 1929, in LaGrange, IN to Orville and Lelia (Garlets) Nelson.
Jan loved being with family, playing bridge, rooting for the Pacers and the Purdue Boilermakers. She was a very active member and officer of the Carmel chapter of Tri Kappa. She was a longtime member of Carmel United Methodist Church. Jan and her late husband, Jim, enjoyed extensive travel and cruises during their retirement, and spent cold winters in Sarasota, FL.
Janice was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. We have many fond memories of large family dinners at Christmas and Easter holidays.
In addition to her parents, Jan was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Smith; son-in-law, Jerry Haskett; sisters, Oneita Nelson, Phyllis Meyer, Goldie Hooley; and brothers, Thurlow Nelson, Frazier Nelson and Ralph Nelson.
Survivors include her children, Susan Haskett, Jim Smith (Nancy), and Tom Smith (Kim) and family; grandchildren, Katie (Chris) Walker, Jamie (Erin) Haskett, and Rebecca (Jason) Deckard; Jan was also blessed with 8 great-grandchildren, Tyler, Tate and Grace Walker, J.D. and Will Haskett, Austin, Isaac and Andrew Deckard.
Family and friends will gather Friday, September 27, 2024, in Carmel United Methodist Church from 1:00-3:00 pm with the funeral service beginning at 3 pm.
Burial will be immediately following in Carmel Cemetery.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Janice, be given to the Endowment Scholarship Fund, Carmel United Methodist Church, 621 S Rangeline Road, Carmel, IN 46032. Envelopes will be available at the church.
