Jack Hoffman Obituary

Jack Hoffman, 84, of Carmel, passed on to Heaven while in the arms of his beloved wife and sweetheart of 61 years, Elinor (Elly) on April 2, 2020.

He was surrounded by his loving children, Evan Hoffman, Susan (Hoffman) Larche Pierre Larche, and Drew Hoffman (Kerry Wonders); grandchildren, Austin Hoffman (Katelyn), Lauren Hoffman (Garrett Navin-fiance’), Max Larche, Emma Larche, and his dog, Sweetie. Jack absolutely adored and was completely devoted to his family.

Jack was born February 12, 1936 in Indianapolis, IN, son of James A. Hoffman and Martha Jane (McComb) Hoffman. He was a graduate of Arsenal Tech High School, attended Butler University, completed studies at ITT Technical Institute and then went on to graduate from Purdue University with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He served in the Indiana National Guard.

A hard and diligent worker his entire life, Jack had two paper routes at age 9.  As a teen, he worked at Koehler’s Meat Market and H&M Machine Company. Following college graduation, Jack worked at Stewart Warner where he developed patents for heat exchangers. He then became Chief Engineer at ITT Hoffman. In 1983, Jack founded and nurtured Hoffman Sales & Specialty Company (HVAC market) into a successful business that continues today.

Jack’s memberships included ASHRAE and ASPE.

Jack lived life to the fullest.  As a teen, he enjoyed flying his dad’s airplane and playing in the marching band.  He was a recognized photographer and lifelong cartophile. He helped design both his family homes in Carmel.

As the quintessential family man, Jack coached his children’s youth sports teams, taught their Sunday school and confirmation classes at Carmel Church. He loved to play golf and spend warm summer days with his family on his speed and pontoon boats on Dale Hollow and Sweetwater Lakes.  He enjoyed listening to big band music and attending concerts at the Palladium and other venues.

Jack adored his wife and together they loved to travel. They had many wonderful trips to Europe as well as throughout the US. Jack shared decades of beautiful “lake” memories with family at his historic log cabin on Sweetwater Lake. He would spend “the blue above and the green below” days working on house projects and yard projects among the woods and wildflowers.  He enjoyed swimming, boating and sipping wine with his “Lady.”

Jack was a man of kindness and integrity: honest, 100% devoted to his family with the sweetest smile and witty sense of humor that made many a stranger and his entire family laugh.

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his grandson, Dusty Hoffman; brothers, Jan Hoffman, Jim Bill Hoffman and sister, Nancy Dennis.

A Memorial and Celebration of Jack’s Life will take place at a later date.
