Harvey Kirby Obituary

Harvey Stuart Kirby, better known as "Sonny" or "Kirby" to many, passed away at the age of 89 on May 17th, 2018.

Harvey was born on June 2nd, 1928 to Ora and Kathryn Kirby in Noblesville, IN.  As a young boy of 8 or 9 he began developing a strong work ethic by building chicken crates to earn money for his family. As a teenager, he worked for his Aunt Iva and Uncle Claude cleaning chicken coops and to his dying day he would not eat chicken of any sort. During High School he volunteered with the Carmel Volunteer Fire Department and he and his best friend Everett Cox would get out of school and go tearing down the main street of Carmel in his Willy's to perform their duties.  In 1947 Harvey went on to graduate Carmel High School.  After school, he entered the United States Air Force during the Korean War and served a period of time on Okinawa.  While at Nellis AFB he married his Carmel sweetheart, Patricia A. Lockhart, in Las Vegas in 1952.  Following his tour of duty, Harvey and Patricia returned to Carmel, Indiana where they raised four children, Karen, Keven, Kent and Kurt on a farm west of Carmel.

Harvey was a very hard worker and knew something about almost everything.  He was a farmer first and foremost. He passed his love of farming on to two of his sons.  Harvey was one of the founding members of the local VFW.  He was the head engineer for all the Indiana State Police posts. Harvey was a volunteer fireman for the Carmel Fire Department. After retiring from the State Police, he took on the challenge of managing the Carmel Waste Water Treatment Plant. He only planned to stay with the City of Carmel for 3 months but ended up retiring 17 years later. Harvey will be remembered for his honesty, integrity, hardwork, toughness and his quirky sense of humor.

Harvey was predeceased by his parents and wife, Patricia.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Karen (Ernie Maroon) Kirby, grandchildren Adam Trotter and Kathryn (Barry) Dircks and great- grandchildren Trisha and Nathaniel Dircks; son, Kevin Kirby, grandchildren, Colin (Kacie) Kirby and great-granddaughter, Chayla Kirby, Elise (Kenneth) Story great-grandsons Finnley and Nolan Story and loving daughter-in-law Jeanine Kirby; son, Kent Kirby and grandchildren, Hayden Hoffman and Nicole Kirby, and son, Kurt (Genan) Kirby and granddaughter, Kaitlin (Austin) Summers.

Dad so loved the country, farming, his family and many friends.  After Patricia passed away, his daughter Karen cared for him.  She helped him enjoy many winters in Arizona and summers in Indiana.

Thank you to all for the part you played in Harvey's life.
