Gary Melby, born September 27, 1948, in Appleton, Wisconsin, and passed away on March 26, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, generosity, and deep-rooted devotion to those he held dear.
Gary spent his childhood in Appleton, Wisconsin, where he developed the values and spirit that would guide him throughout his life. A proud and lifelong fan of the Green Bay Packers, Gary rarely missed a game and carried his team pride with him wherever he went. He was also an avid supporter of the Milwaukee Brewers, Indiana Pacers, and Indiana University—especially meaningful to him as three of his four children graduated from IU.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Joyce Melby; his brother, Michael; and his sister, Karen.
He is survived by his brother, Thomas, as well as his four children—Scott, Christopher (Lauren), Ryan, and Kendra (Peter)—who were the center of his world. Gary also leaves behind eight beloved grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense pride and joy.
Gary built a successful career in sales within the sporting goods industry, where his natural charisma, work ethic, and genuine ability to connect with others made him both respected and well-liked. He believed deeply in the importance of relationships, often reminding his children, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” Gary lived this motto every day, valuing the friendships and connections he built more than anything else.
Outside of his professional life, Gary was a fervent lover of golf and an active member of Harbour Trees Golf Club, where he is honored in the club’s Hall of Fame, and Bethel Lutheran Church, where he formed many meaningful friendships and gave generously of his time.
Nothing brought Gary more joy than being present for his grandchildren. He cherished attending their sporting events and school activities, showing up for every moment he possibly could. He was rarely empty-handed, often arriving with a special treat—most memorably, a pack of M&M’s—small gestures that became treasured traditions and lasting memories.
Those who knew Gary will remember him best for his incredible sense of humor and his unwavering willingness to lend a hand. Whether it was volunteering his time, sharing a joke, or simply showing up when it mattered most, Gary made an unforgettable impact on everyone he met.
His warmth, laughter, and kindness will be deeply missed but forever remembered by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Celebration of Gary’s life to be held on Sunday, June 28, 2026 in Harbour Trees Golf and Beach Club, 333 Regents Park Lane, Noblesville, IN 46062.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) in his honor and in support of his grandson, Josh.
