Ellen Margaret Humke Barmore, age 86, Homeplace, passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2018. She was born on May 19, 1931 in Evansville, IN, to the late Homer and Mabel Humke. From 1937 to 1945 she lived in North Manchester, IN, which she considered her home town. She moved to Carmel, IN, in 1945, and graduated from Carmel High School on her 17th birthday in 1948. On June 25, 1949, she married Robert Barmore, who preceded her in death on May 19, 2007. They resided in Carmel, IN, Philo, IL, Marion, IN, returning to Carmel in 1986.
She was deputy tax assessor in Clay Township, Hamilton County from 1954 to 1964 and deputy tax assessor in Pleasant Township, Grant County from 1966 to 1970. In 1970 she was appointed by Governor Whitcomb as the tax assessor for Pleasant Township, Grant County where she served until 1972.
In 1970, she began a career in the insurance business at American States Insurance Company. During her career, she progressed from Claims Secretary, to Field Adjuster, Branch Claims Manager (Marion, IN), Regional Claims Manager (Anderson, IN), and was ultimately named Casualty Claims National Supervisor (Indianapolis), retiring in 1994. She received the AIC designation from the Insurance Institute of America. After retirement from American States, Ellen became co-owner with her husband of two Carmel businesses, Castle Maid, and The Enchanted Florist. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, and a Girl Scout Troop Leader. She was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, where she taught children’s Bible school, and sang in the choir. She was a member of the Carmel-Clay Historical Society and past president of Wednesday Literary Society. She enjoyed reading, writing, singing, researching genealogy, embroidery, sewing, and cooking, but her greatest joy was being with family.
In addition to her parents and husband, Ellen was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Thompson, Armitta Hahn, Rose Watts, Hilda Hadley, brother, Lewis Humke, and niece, Linn Ann Watts.
Ellen is survived by daughters, Brenda Jones and Roberta Barmore; son, Matthew Barmore (Allison); grandchildren, Ben Jones (Kelly), Laura Jones McDaniel (Scott), Rebekah Jones Hamm (Loren), Neal Jones (Lisa), Bradley Barmore (Kelly), Kelly Barmore Smith (Carl), Taylor O’Brien Culvey (Trey), Ansley Thornton, and Ellery Thornton, and 12 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will take place at 1 pm on Sunday, March 4, 2018 in Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 445 E 111th Street, Indianapolis, IN, 46280. The funeral service will follow at 3 pm in the church. Burial will follow in William’s Creek Cemetery.
In memory of Ellen, contributions may be given to Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. Envelopes will be available at the service.
