Donald Herbert Wissman, 85, Indianapolis, passed away Sunday, December 13, 2020 in Westminster Village North, Indianapolis after a long battle against Parkinson’s disease. Donald was born September 28, 1935 in Allen County, IN, son of the late Fred and Loretta (Hollmann) Wissman.
After graduating from New Haven High School in 1953, Donald studied chemistry at Indiana University for two years before joining the army. He served in Germany with the 557th Field Artillery Battalion. After serving his country, he took his first job with the state of Indiana. He spent most of his career with FSSA as a County Finance Advisor, serving under eight governors over 42 years. Upon retirement, Governor O’Bannon recognized him as a Distinguished Hoosier in 2003.
Don enjoyed many interests, including gardening, cooking, dancing, playing bridge, Harry Potter, genealogy, and singing. He was a former member of the Metropolitan Lutheran Choir, the Dick Dennis Chorale, and the Greenfield Community Choir. In 2010, he became a boxer at Rock Steady Boxing. There he found a community of people who gave him hope and courage to fight Parkinson’s disease. He was incredibly proud to be a part of the Rock Steady family.
Survivors include his daughter, Christina Young (Tony); sons, Peter Wissman (Michelle) and Nicholas Wissman; ex-wife, Carol Wissman (Phyllis); 4 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by his first wife, Dolores Strickler Wissman; and grandson, Alex Snedeker.
A celebration of life will be determined at a later date.
