Donald Alexander Payne,90, of Carmel, passed away November 25, 2020. He was born June 2, 1930 in Indianapolis, son of Alexander Legrand and Sadie Olive Payne.
The Payne family moved to Sarasota, FL when Don was in elementary school. He was a 1947 graduate of Sarasota High School where he was an avid athlete. He was fortunate to receive a baseball scholarship and attend Butler University where he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in education and later taught English at Butler.
After college, Don proudly served in the US Army from 1952 until 1954 where he served in the Korean Conflict while stationed in Japan.
Don was a pioneer in the Specialty Advertising Industry for more than 50 years, promoting businesses across the country. He served as Vice President of Joe Myers Advertising from 1958-1965; Vice President and co-owner of Nicholson-Payne from 1965-1970 and finally President and owner of Don Payne Advertising from 1970 until retirement in 2010. Don earned several Gold Pyramid Awards and acquired a MAS (Master of Advertising Specialty) which allowed him great experiences and success.
No one was a stranger to Don. He was willing to help anyone in need at any time. Don was an avid golfer and enjoyed a previous membership at the Old Oakland Golf Club. He loved to watch all sports, especially the Indianapolis Colts. Of course, he was a faithful supporter and follower of his beloved Butler Bulldogs and seldom missed watching a game.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Lynn Blackburn Payne; second wife, Pastor Vicki Jefferies Payne, to whom he was married 46 years; daughter, Cynthia Cleveringa Salings, and stepdaughter, Debbie Jefferies.
Survivors include three sons, Joseph (Laura) Payne, Randal (Debbie Green) Payne and Gregory Payne, all of Indianapolis; grandson, Richard Cleveringa, Jr.; step-grandson, Josh Jefferies; and stepson, Phillip (Barbara) Jefferies.
In compliance with the CDC regulations of Covid 19, there will not be a service; however, a Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.
