Cathleen Merriman Obituary

Cathleen “Elaine” Merriman, 93, of Carmel, IN, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully December 08, 2023, in Indianapolis, IN.  She was born May 4, 1930, in Kewanee, IL, daughter of Walter and Virginia (Baumgartner) Gillespie. Elaine lived a vibrant life filled with love, laughter, and cherished moments with her family.
A crossword puzzle aficionado and a Jeopardy enthusiast, Elaine had an insatiable curiosity for knowledge and an agile mind that thrived on intellectual challenges. Her love for learning and sharing her wisdom made her a respected authority among her peers.
Beyond her intellectual pursuits, Elaine found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She enjoyed reading cookbooks and creating her own recipes.  She enjoyed her flower gardens and backyard wildlife.

She was a member of the Carmel Historical Society, Carmel United Methodist Choir, and Wednesday Literary Club of Carmel.
An avid pet lover, Elaine's home was always filled with warmth and companionship.  She also found solace and delight in spending countless hours listening to talk radio, staying informed and engaged in the world around her.
However, above all her interests, Elaine treasured nothing more than spending quality time surrounded by her beloved family. Her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

In addition to her parents, Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Astrouski; son, Jan Astrouski; and siblings, Gilmer, Sylvia, Nora, Ralph, and Helen.
Elaine is survived by 3 children: Tony (Lisa) Astrouski (son), Gail Pierce (daughter), Lou Ann (Lynn) Wager (daughter), 3 grandchildren: Chris (LJ) Astrouski (grandson), Jana Astrouski (granddaughter) Darragh (Ian) Carstensen (granddaughter), 2 great-grandchildren (Josephine and Otto Carstensen), and a multitude of friends and loved ones who will forever cherish her memory.

She was formerly employed at Indiana Automotive Wholesalers Association, Carmel-Westfield Walmart and Jacobsons.
