Betty "Jean" Chance Obituary

Betty Jean (Rich) Chance, 87, of Westfield, passed away June 18, 2019.  She was born in Crab Orchard, KY on April 4, 1932, daughter of Dalton Rich, Sr and Myrtle Brewer Rich.

Jean was a graduate of Hayden High School. Following graduations, she worked as Payroll Clerk for the Indiana State Police for more than a year.  Jean continued her education at Indiana University Extension, Indianapolis. In 1952, Jean received her teaching degree in elementary education at Ball State University.  She then received her master’s degree in guidance at Butler University in 1957.  Jean taught in the Indianapolis School System for more than 34 years, as she was committed to her students learning.

Jean was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority. She also served as past president of the Westfield Woman’s Club.

As a strong supporter of President Trump, Jean was actively involved in the Republican legislators both state and nationally.  Jean also supported the Inner-City Missions, Riley Hospital, St. Jude Hospital and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

During the day, Jean enjoyed watching the animals scurry about as she sat in her living room. She appreciated the work of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and the care they provide to protect animals. Jean was also an avid sports fan watching many of the games on TV.

In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by brothers, Dalton Rich, Jr., who died in a terrible auto accident and Billy Joe Rich, who died of an incurable brain tumor.

Survivors include her devoted husband of more than 26 years, Robert J. “Bob” Chance; stepchildren, Michael (Anna) Chance of St. Louis, MO, Eric (Dawn) Chance of Southport, IN and Teresa (Randy) Godfroy of South Whitley, IN; aunt, Bernice Owen and step-grandchildren, Celeidh Chance, Moira Chance, Natasha Chance (Andrew) Simms, Rebecca Chance, Sean Godfroy and Trystin Godfroy.
