Alan Truman Obituary

Alan Kay Truman, Sr., 86, formerly of Beckley, WV, passed away peacefully in his sleep Tuesday, December 19, 2023. He was born March 31, 1937 in Beckley, WV, son of Alfred and Lillian Gladys (Bailey) Truman.

As a 1955 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, WV, he lettered in football and met the love of his life, Peggy Kelly. They were married on December 21, 1956.

Alan had experience in a variety of workplaces such as Truman Mine Supply Company, Karts and Parts, Alderson Fire Department, US Postal Service, and Only-Way-Water LLC.

Alan was an Aircraft Mechanic in the 130th Troop Carrier Squadron of the West Virginia Air National Guard and served as a Sergeant and Tank Commander in the 150th Armored Cavalry Regiment Company F, West Virginia Army National Guard.

Memberships where Alan was actively involved were Elks Lodge, Beckley Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Beni Kedem Shrine Temple, Black Knight Country Club, and the Vestry of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.

Alan was a 61-year member of the Masonic Fraternity as well as an active Shriner. He was initiated and became a Mason on May 21, 1962.  He then became a Master Mason on August 23, 1962, Worshipful Master of Beckley Lodge #95 A.F. & A.M. in 1966, and President Noble of the Scottish Rite. Other notable positions included Beckley Civil Defense Director, Grand Juror for Raleigh County Circuit Court, Man of the Year by the Orchard Valley Women’s Club, BSA Scoutmaster, BSA Seneca District Chairman, Chairman of the Expo Scout Committee, BSA Silver Beaver Award, President of the Beckley Wally Byam Caravan Club, and Honorary Kentucky Colonel.

Interestingly, Alan received his private pilot license before he had an automobile driver’s license. He earned a Commercial Pilot rating for multi-engine fixed wings and helicopters.

Alan enjoyed his Ham Radio: WA8AZM, and was Co-Chairman of U.S. Army Military Affiliate Radio System (MARS).

Alan relished living life, he was fun-loving and gregarious. He looked forward to time with his family and friends. Whether snow skiing at Snowshoe, Winterplace, Vail, Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, and Arapahoe Basin; SCUBA diving and boating in Summersville Lake; or having a big ole bonfire by the Greenbrier River in Alderson, he had a great time and provided lots of laughs and tremendous memories.

To sum up, what Alan considered important and enjoyable was family, aviation, and WVU football!

In addition to his parents, Alan was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Kelly Truman; son, James Alfred Truman; and sister, Carol Bowers Baker.

Survivors include his sons, Alan (Susan Keck-Truman) Truman, Jr. of Los Altos, CA, and Timothy (Lisa Toth) Truman of Indianapolis, IN; grandchildren, Tyler Truman (Haley Neff) of Beckley, WV and Alan “Trip” Truman, III of Houston, TX; great-grandson, Tristan Truman of Beckley, WV; as well as several beloved nieces, nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews.
