Steven Ohman Obituary

Steven David Ohman, 53 of Westfield, IN, passed away October 7, 2019 in his home, while lovingly surrounded by family.  He was born July 23,1966, in Ridgewood, NJ, son of David L. and Marilyn Poage Ohman.

The family moved to Keene, NH, where Steve and his siblings enjoyed playing in the woods, living near extended family, and everything about living in a small town.

At the age of 13, his family moved to Pensacola, FL, to become part of the ministry of Pensacola Christian College.  Steve attended Pensacola Christian Academy, graduated, and went on to attend the college, where he earned a B.S. degree in Advertising and Public Relations.  It was also during this time that he met his bride, Sherri.  It was love at first sight!  They married on June 10, 1989 and have enjoyed 30 wonderful years together.

Steve LOVED serving in local church ministry, first in Concord, NH, and then in Westfield, IN. He loved helping with Vacation Bible School, church softball, teaching Sunday school, planning new ministries, landscaping and caring for the church property, building projects, and serving as a deacon.  His most favorite ministry was as choir director/song leader at Trinity Baptist Church in Westfield, IN.  He enjoyed finding music that glorified God and edified the church family in their walk with Christ.  Steve loved practicing his directing in preparation for each choir practice and was thrilled to lead and hear the choir each Sunday in worship. He also participated by playing his trumpet. The most meaningful aspect of serving in the music ministry was singing with his sons, Drew and Justin.  His love of music was passed on to them. While confined to bed during his cancer battle, Steve scheduled special music, and even put together a new songbook.

During the three years Steve battled bone cancer, each day he chose to trust God’s sovereignty and love.  Although he was in constant pain, he never complained, and always reminded his family this was what God chose for Him, so he wanted God to receive glory for it.

Psalm 46:10 was the verse he and Sherri claimed when he was first diagnosed. It says, "Be still and know that I am God."  God was his source of strength.

Steve accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior at the age of 8 after hearing a Bible lesson about his sinful heart at a backyard Bible club his mom hosted.  Because of this relationship with Christ, Steve is now in heaven with his Savior.  We KNOW we will see him again!  He wants you to know his Savior and be sure you will have a home in heaven too.

His life verses were:

Micah 6:8 " He hath shown thee, O man, what is good and what the Lord requires of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God."

I Cor. 4:2 "Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful."

Steve’s desire was to be faithful to his Lord in everything he did.  He modeled it in our home, his job, and in ministry.

In addition to his parents, Steve is also survived by his devoted wife, Sherri Lynn Ohman; sons, Andrew S. Ohman (finance', Rebekah J. Carr) and Justin D. Ohman; brothers, Michael L. (Becky) Ohman, Timothy P. (Tonya) Ohman; sister, Karen R. Ohman; several nieces and nephews.
