My deepest condolences to the family. I was one of Steve's English students in Mississippi way back in the early 1980's. Coffeecup "basketball" for extra credit, long off-topic rambling class discussions and donut/coffee runs by whichever classmate had a car that day made for interesting and fun class meetings. I got to thinking of those days, and the last time I saw Steve in Connecticut (I lived there briefly too) and thought to see who I could find.... deeply saddened to have found this page. Good memories.

My Dad and Stephen were friends and Stephen was like another father to me. He taught me chess and got me interested in military history. I remember his collection of Ballentine WWII books in his library, which seemed so impressive. In many ways, Stephen provided me the direction which guides me still. I wish I was able to thank him while he was still with us how much he contributed to my life and success.

I've been reflecting on my meeting Stephen when Margot and I visited him in December 2015. We had a wonderful time and a fun "road trip" to The Hoosier Gym in Knightstown. I will miss not seeing Stephen again and engaging in our sports' discussions, particularly of tennis legends. May he rest in peace.
