Mary Dale Obituary

Mary Kalopy (Christ) Dale, 89, of Miami, FL, formerly of Indianapolis, passed away Monday, January 13, 2020. She was born December 7, 1930 in Battle Creek, MI, the middle child of Greek immigrant parents, John and Ellen (Nitsas) Christ.

In 1949, Mary graduated from Battle Creek Central High School and then attended Western Michigan University.  She met her future husband George Dale, a veteran of WWII, after he wrote her a letter at the encouragement of his relatives acquainted with Mary and her family in Battle Creek.  When he received her response, he decided he needed to meet her.  That began their love story, and they were soon married on April 30, 1950.

Mary was a selfless, kind, and loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, daughter, daughter-in-law, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.  She was loved by all who knew her. She remained an amazing letter writer for many years to keep in touch with family and friends. Mary also worked for many years, retiring as an Administrative Assistant at Walker Research in Indianapolis.

Mary loved spending time planting flowers and tomatoes and other landscaping around their home.  She was an amazing cook (especially her stuffed peppers for her grandkids) and she loved to bake.  The family loved her New Year’s traditional tiropita.  As a faithful student of God’s word, Mary spent time with George expanding her Bible knowledge watching ”Through the Bible” with Les Feldick.   Mary and George were avid fans of Butler basketball and were season ticket holders for a number of years.  The greatest joy for Mary was spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband of almost 70 years, George A. Dale; sons, William (Deborah) Dale and Robert (Beatriz) Dale; 4 grandchildren, Dan (Gloria) Dale, Sarah (Paul) Phelps, Natalie Dale, Stephen (Erin) Dale; 6 great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Anna, Alexandra, Ava, Phoebe, and Brooks; brothers, Chris Christ, Peter (Carolyn) Christ.  She was the loving Aunt Kalopy to her beloved nieces and nephews.

Mary was a longtime member of Colonial Hills Baptist Church, 8140 Union Chapel Road, Indianapolis, IN 46240 where family and friends will gather on Saturday, January 18, 2020 from 10 am to noon for visitation with the funeral service beginning at noon. A Committal Service will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, IN.
