Lewis Henry Thieman, 89, of Carmel, passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2018. He was born in Minster, OH on March 31, 1929, son of Henry and Clara Fink Thieman.
He taught at Henry Ford Community College and was also an adjunct Professor at Wayne State University. Lewis worked at Wagner Ware in Sydney, OH from 1954-1956 and it was during that time he met his wife Barbara and married her on November 17, 1956. He worked as a Computer Engineer and Chief Analyst at the Ford Motor Co in Dearborn, MI from 1959-1989.
Lewis was a veteran of the US Navy, having served in the Korean War on the USS Boxer, USS Gurke and USS Anderson as the editor of the newspaper, chief librarian and head Chaplain’s assistant and later additionally chief Yeoman. While living in Trenton, MI, he also was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Jaycee’s and served as director for Junior Achievement.
Lewis had a remarkable talent and gift in woodworking. He created remarkable pieces, which family members treasure. He had the ability to repair anything. Lewis had a love for car’s and anything mechanical. Lewis was an active volunteer and enjoyed participating in church events. He gave much of his time helping with the Merciful HELP Center. Through the years, he also volunteered with the K OF C, Dad’s Club, Trenton Jaycees, Junior Achievement, Boy Scouting and Explorers, the American Diabetes Association, and the Red Cross. Even as a young man, Lewis led by example working with under privileged children directing Sidney Ohio’s Soap Box Derby and served as the director all local operations.
Lewis believed the greatest and most important achievement in his life was being an exemplary father to his children and grandfather to his grandchildren. He certainly was involved in their lives and was a wonderful role model.
In addition to both his parents, Lewis was preceded in death by his loving wife, Barbara Graffam Thieman; sister, Agnes Rammel and brother, Paul Thieman.
Survivors include his son, Thomas (Laura) Thieman and daughters, Doreen (Robert) Viney, Jayne (William) Slaton; grandchildren, Geoffrey (Amanda) Slaton, Jennifer (Justin) Slaton-Boyd, Christina (Alexander) Slaton-Storer, Robert Viney Jr., Alexandra Viney, and Samuel Thieman; great-grandchildren, Brigham Boyd and Leena Boyd. Also surviving Lewis are his siblings, Rita Keller, Alma Solomon, Leo (Thelma) Thieman, Gerald Thieman, Mary Ann Hemmelgarn, Carol Brunswick and many other relatives.
Family and friends will gather on Thursday, June 7, 2018 from 5- 8 pm in Our Lady of Mt Carmel Catholic Church, 14598 Oak Ridge Road, Carmel with the Rosary beginning at 5 pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 am on Friday, June 8 with calling from 9 am until service time.
A Committal Service will take place on Monday, June 11, 2018 at 11 am in Our Lady of Hope Catholic Cemetery, Brownstown, MI.
