Obituary

JEAN MARKS BAIL, 92, OF INDIANAPOLIS (HAMILTON COUNTY), PASSED AWAY PEACEFULLY ON JUNE 2, 2019.  SHE WAS BORN IN PLYMOUTH, MARSHALL COUNTY, ON SEPTEMBER 15, 1926, DAUGHTER OF HAROLD L. MARKS, SR. AND LOUISE HOHAM MARKS.

JEAN RECEIVED HER BUSINESS DEGREE FROM IU SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND TWO MASTER OF EDUCATION DEGREES.

COMPETITIVE BALLROOM DANCING WAS A PASSION OF JEAN’S.  SHE STUDIED DANCE WITH INSTRUCTORS: DAN RUTHERFORD, INDIANAPOLIS, CHRIS FORD, INDIANAPOLIS, DAN O’DAY, MISHAWAKA, AND BRIAN O’DAY, SOUTH BEND.  SHE PARTICIPATED IN NUMEROUS DANCE COMPETITIONS, INCLUDING THE OHIO STAR BALL, DANCING WITH HER INSTRUCTOR, DAN RUTHERFORD. DANCE ENABLED JEAN TO WALK WITHOUT ANY ASSISTIVE DEVICES, EVER.  HER BALANCE, COORDINATION AND POSTURE WERE THE RESULT OF DANCE TRAINING.

OTHER HOBBIES JEAN ENJOYED WERE SEWING, KNITTING, CROSS STITCH, AND EMBROIDERY.  SHE WROTE STORIES OF HER LIFE WHICH WILL BE PUBLISHED, LISTENED TO THE ENTIRE BIBLE TWICE, ATTENDED CHURCH REGULARLY, WORKED JIGSAW PUZZLES, AND LISTENED TO BOOKS ON TAPE.

AFTER RETIRING FROM TEACHING, JEAN VOLUNTEERED AT AN ART MUSEUM, GIVING TOURS TO SCHOOL CHILDREN AND MAKING FRIENDS WITH WHOM SHE TRAVELED ALL OVER THE WORLD, VISITING SOME PLACES THAT ARE NOT ACCESSIBLE TODAY.

EXERCISE WAS AN IMPORTANT PART OF JEAN’S LIFE.  SHE ATTENDED CLASSES AT PRIME LIFE ENRICHMENT CENTER THE WEEK BEFORE SHE ENTERED THE HOSPITAL. SHE WAS ALWAYS AN AVID WALKER, AND SHE HAD ALSO ENJOYED BIKE RIDING. 

JEAN LIVED IN AND MAINTAINED HER OWN HOME AND CARED FOR HER PRECIOUS ENGLISH CREAM RETRIEVER, HONEY. BEFORE THAT SHE SPOILED HER TWO GOLDEN RETRIEVERS, FLORA AND LILLY, WHO WERE NAMED AFTER HER GRANDMOTHERS.  HER FIRST GOLDEN RETRIEVER, MITZI, WAS NAMED AFTER DANCER MITZI GAINER. JEAN WAS OFTEN SEEN WALKING HER DOGS.

JEAN WAS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY HER PARENTS AND AN INFANT GRANDSON.

SURVIVORS INCLUDE HER CHILDREN; KELSEY (BARBARA) BAIL, LORAINE (RON) TROYER, LINDA (MARK) BAIL KEEN AND TRACEY BAIL; 10 GRANDCHILDREN; 8 GREAT GRANDCHILDREN, AND BROTHER, HAROLD MARKS, JR.

VISITATION FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS WILL BE ON THURSDAY, JUNE 6, 2019, 1 - 3 PM IN THE CHAPEL OF ST LUKE’S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 100 WEST 86TH STREET.  THE FUNERAL SERVICE WILL FOLLOW AT 3 PM.

BURIAL WILL TAKE PLACE ON MONDAY, JUNE 10, 2019 AT 2 PM IN OAKLAWN CEMETERY, NORTH MANCHESTER, IN.

DONATIONS IN HER MEMORY MAY BE MADE TO THE DORIS DAY ANIMAL LEAGUE, 1255 23RD STREET NW, WASHINGTON, D.C. 20037.  ENVELOPES WILL BE AVAILABLE AT THE SERVICE.
