Charles E. Russell, 83 of Carmel, passed away December 10, 2018. He was born on April 15, 1935 in Indianapolis, to Charles M. Russell and Frances A. Stoll Russell.
Charles attended Howe High School, followed by Butler University, where he graduated with a B.A. in 1957. He later obtained his M.A. in 1960 from Indiana University. While in school, Charles worked at the U.S. postal service as a mail carrier during the summer.
He started his teaching career at Arsenal Tech High School, where he taught for three years. Charlie taught at North Central High School from 1963 until 2010, 27 years of which were spent as the Head of the Science Department. In addition to his work at North Central, he taught science at Butler University from 1960 to 1990. During his time as a teacher, Charlie obtained several awards including the North Central Teacher of the Year, and the Superintendent Service Award for the Washington Township School District.
Charlie was a member of the St. Mark’s UMC and was a lifetime member of the Indiana Academy of Science. Charlie loved spending time with all the grandchildren. The times at the lake and the holidays were especially meaningful to him. He enjoyed reading, playing the piano, and lunch with colleagues. Charles was very connected to St. Mark’s and enjoyed Bible study and working the Holy Walk.
Charles is survived by his sister, Fran Hageboeck; nephew, Skip (Samantha) Hageboeck, niece, Cyndi Miller; great-nieces and nephews, Charlie, Jacob (Felicity), Katie, Emily, Morgan, Robbie, and Logan; nieces, Susie (Roger) Hartzell and Cathy (Chris) Chandler and families.
Family and friends will gather on Sunday, December 16, 2018 at 3:30 pm in St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, Carmel followed by a Celebration of Life service beginning at 5:00 pm.
In memory of Charlie, contributions can be made to St. Mark’s for support of Red Bird Mission or the Lebanon Children’s Home. Envelopes will be available at the church.
