Barbara Holman (nee Welker), wife of Gerry Holman and daughter of Rudy and Eleanor Welker, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2018. Barb leaves behind 6 children and 19 grandchildren. Also, surviving her, are siblings Charlotte Welker-Gay (Allen), Michael Welker (Sandie), and Karen Megery (Mike).
Barb was born in Garfield Heights, OH in 1948. She attended St. Therese elementary school and Hoban Dominican high school. She went on to pursue an Elementary Education degree at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. During college, she was also a member of the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority.
Barb met Gerry at Bowling Green State University. It was here they met and fell in love. They married in 1968 and soon found themselves in several different cities throughout the Midwest where they raised 6 children. Perrysburg, Chicago, St. Louis, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Findlay, and Indianapolis were just a few of the cities in which they lived.
Barb taught elementary education for 25 plus years, most of them in Catholic schools. She put her heart and soul into teaching young children. Barb was famous for staying up all hours of the night preparing lesson plans for the next day and checking papers. Everything always had to be in perfect order before school the next day.
Throughout their years together, Barb and Gerry rarely found themselves at home. They stayed active in the many parishes in which they belonged (helping with spaghetti dinners, BINGO nights, etc…). They loved to travel together whether it was years ago to Europe or on some of their more recent trips to Florida, Gatlinburg, Nashville, or New Orleans. When home in IN or Cleveland, they were often found at the ballfields, basketball courts, or tracks cheering on their many grandchildren.
In 2010, soon after relocating back to IN, Barb was diagnosed with Stage 3 Ovarian Cancer. With the help of doctors, nurses, and chemotherapy, Barb was able to fight off the cancer for 8 years. Barb stayed strong physically and spiritually. Her mind was set that cancer wasn’t going to interfere with her daily life. Barb taught for several of these 8 years before eventually retiring. She continued attending ball games, getting her nails done, meeting friends for lunch, going to the movies, exploring new cities, and traveling to and from Cleveland and Colorado so she could attend First Communions, graduations, and or birthdays. She also got to meet the last 6 of her 19 grandkids and watch them grow.
Barb loved to cook in her free time. She collected all kind of cookbooks and cooking magazines. From appetizers to dinners to side dishes to desserts, she was always trying something new. She was famous for her sauerkraut balls, cheesy potatoes, bar cookies, and cheesecake. She also loved her cooking shows. Emeril, Iron Chef, The Chew, and Chopped were just a few of her favorites over the years.
Barb’s love for others and her kind heart will always be remembered. Christmas was her favorite holiday. Even through the past year, she continued to buy Christmas presents for all her children, sons and daughter in-law, and grandkids. Her list though (sometimes to Gerry’s dismay) extended far beyond family. She would also buy for her nail-tech, her hair dresser, her closest counterparts at school, etc... You name it and Barb would find a present for them. She loved to give and make others happy.
Barb will be dearly missed!
